🇫🇮Finland salary guide · updated October 2026

What tech actually pays in Finland

Finland publishes some of the cleanest salary statistics in Europe — Statistics Finland reports the median, mean and decile spread for every occupation code, and the engineering unions survey tens of thousands of members every autumn — and yet most 'developer salary in Finland' pages still mislead, in both directions. Modelled estimates from international salary vendors run 60–70% above the official median; narrow job-title averages run well below it; and contractor hourly rates get presented as salaries. This guide keeps the three segments that actually decide your number apart — the collective-agreement mainstream, the Helsinki-region product and big-tech tier, and USD-paid remote work — by role and experience level, and traces every band to a named source: Statistics Finland, the Tietoala and TEK surveys, Koodaripula's advertised-pay data, and levels.fyi's verified Helsinki packages.

The median software developer in Finland earns 4,999 EUR gross per month for regular working hours, per Statistics Finland's 2024 structure-of-earnings data covering 30,334 developers (mean 5,146; the bottom tenth earn under 3,470, the top tenth over 7,000). New graduates start around 3,100–4,000 EUR, mid-level developers at typical employers earn 4,400–5,600, and seniors 5,500–7,000. The Helsinki big-tech and funded-product tier pays well above that: verified levels.fyi packages put the senior median near 7,090 EUR/month in total compensation, with company medians at Wolt around 8,250 and at Nvidia and Mapbox above 9,000.

The mainstream market is compressed and well-measured. Statistics Finland's 2024 data puts the software-developer median at 4,999 EUR/month with a p10–p90 spread of 3,470–7,000, and the broader 251 group of developers and analysts (61,025 people) at 5,184. The Tietoala IT-sector survey from late 2025 lands in the same place — median 5,026, mean 5,188, up 4.7% in a year — and shows the regional split the official tables lack: the capital region pays 5,360, about 13% above the rest of Finland. Within that market, experience moves you predictably: new graduates start around 3,100–4,000 EUR (Tietoala graduates 3,141; TEK's 2025 M.Sc. graduates 4,000), mid-level developers earn 4,400–5,600, and seniors 5,500–7,000 — the band where advertised senior and lead roles cluster at 5,500–5,750 and TEK's demanding expert roles top out near 6,850.

The top segment does not follow that compression. Verified Helsinki packages on levels.fyi show an all-level median of about 75,400 EUR/year (≈6,280/month) and a senior median of about 85,100 (≈7,090/month), with the senior upper quartile near 9,500/month and the top tenth above 11,700 — company medians at Wolt (≈8,250/month), Nvidia (≈9,310) and Mapbox (≈10,050) sit 30–60% above the mainstream senior band, partly as bonus and equity. The third option, USD-paid remote or contracting, pays roughly $4,000–10,000/month depending on level — competitive with the top tier at senior, and the benchmark to know before any palkkaneuvottelu.

What the 'average salary' pages get wrong about Finland

Three distortions dominate. First, modelled inflation: international salary vendors publish 'average software developer salary in Finland' figures around 83,000 EUR/year (≈6,900/month) with no survey behind them — roughly 65% above the official median of 4,999, and higher than Statistics Finland's 90th percentile. Second, narrow deflation: job-title averages built from employer-reported titles (around 4,400 EUR for 'ohjelmistokehittäjä') cover a few thousand people and undercut the ISCO-coded population of 30,334 by more than 10%. Third, contractor rates: freelance-marketplace pages quote hourly or monthly contractor fees as if they were employee salaries, ignoring pension, holiday pay and the collective agreement.

Add the gross/net confusion for international readers — Finnish salaries are always quoted gross, before roughly a third in income tax and employee pension and unemployment contributions at the developer median, with the employer's TyEL pension contribution coming on top of the quoted figure — and any single-number answer is wrong for most readers. Every figure on this page is gross EUR per month for regular working hours, dated, and sourced.

How to negotiate with these numbers

  1. Anchor on Statistics Finland: 'the official median for software developers is 4,999 EUR, and the top tenth earns over 7,000' is a factual, culturally acceptable opener in a Finnish palkkakeskustelu.

  2. Benchmark against your segment, not the national median: at a funded Helsinki product company, levels.fyi's verified senior median (≈7,090 EUR/month total compensation) is the honest reference, not the collective-agreement mainstream.

  3. Price the capital-region premium explicitly: Tietoala puts Helsinki-region IT pay 13% above the rest of Finland, so a Tampere or Oulu offer should be compared to the regional figure, not the national one.

  4. Negotiate the starting salary hardest: Finnish annual increases are mostly collective-agreement rounds of 2–4%, so your entry point compounds for years.

  5. At senior level, name real alternatives: Helsinki big tech at 7,000–10,000 EUR and USD remote at $6,000–10,000 both clear the mainstream band, and concrete alternatives move Finnish offers more than percentage asks.

Where these numbers come from

Primary source: Statistics Finland, Structure of Earnings 2024 (table 15au, database updated June 2026) — regular-working-hours earnings of full-time wage and salary earners by occupation, all sectors, October reference. Supporting sources: the Tietoala / Insinööriliitto IT-sector salary survey (Oct–Nov 2025, published March 2026 — median 5,026, capital region 5,360, graduates 3,141); TEK's 2025 salary survey (~9,300 responses — M.Sc. median 5,915, 2025 graduates 4,000, demanding expert roles 5,125 with p90 6,856); Koodaripula advertised-pay data (535 developer job ads over 24 months — junior 3,550, mid 4,500, senior 5,500, lead 5,750); levels.fyi verified Helsinki packages (154 submissions, queried October 2026).

All EUR figures are gross monthly pay for regular working hours unless labelled total compensation (the levels.fyi anchors, which include bonus and equity). Statistics Finland publishes no 75th percentile and no occupation-by-region split, so the Helsinki premium comes from the Tietoala survey. No Finnish source splits frontend, backend, full-stack or mobile pay with a stated sample, so those role pages are derived from the official 2512/2513/2514/2519 distributions and marked indicative. USD-remote bands are indicative international contracting rates, not statistics. Where sources disagree, bands were widened conservatively.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average software developer salary in Finland in 2026?
Statistics Finland's latest structure-of-earnings data (2024, published 2026) puts the median software developer at 4,999 EUR gross per month and the mean at 5,146, across 30,334 full-time developers. The bottom tenth earn under 3,470 and the top tenth over 7,000. The late-2025 Tietoala IT survey agrees (median 5,026) and shows the capital region at 5,360. The Helsinki big-tech tier sits well above: verified senior packages median about 7,090 EUR/month in total compensation.
How much do Wolt, Supercell, Nvidia and other top Helsinki employers pay?
Verified packages on levels.fyi (October 2026) show company medians of roughly 8,250 EUR/month at Wolt, 9,310 at Nvidia and 10,050 at Mapbox in total compensation, against a Helsinki senior median of about 7,090 and an all-level median of about 6,280. Those totals include bonus and equity — typically 30–60% above the collective-agreement senior band of 5,500–7,000.
Are Finnish salaries quoted before or after tax?
Before tax (gross, bruttopalkka), always — including every figure on this page. At the developer median, income tax plus the employee's pension and unemployment contributions take roughly a third of gross pay in Helsinki, with marginal rates above 50% on the top slice. The employer's TyEL pension contribution comes on top of the quoted salary and is real deferred pay worth counting in any offer comparison.
Is USD remote work worth it for Finland-based developers?
At senior level it competes directly with Helsinki big tech: $6,000–10,000/month (≈5,300–8,850 EUR) against verified top-tier packages of roughly 7,000–10,000 EUR/month. At mid level ($4,000–6,500) it clears the typical-employer band of 4,400–5,600 — but weigh what you give up: collective-agreement protections, TyEL pension accrual, occupational health care and Finnish employment security transfer poorly to foreign contracting.
