Local expertise
What Finnish employers expect
Practical guidance based on how Finnish employers actually screen CVs.
Photo optional, details minimal
A photo is common but never required, and anonymous recruitment is spreading. Leave out date of birth, nationality, marital status and your full address — Finnish recruiters are trained not to ask.
Two pages, one clear profile
Two pages is the ceiling. Open with a 3–5 sentence profile, then reverse-chronological experience with concrete results. Tailor every version to the advert.
Language transparency
Write in the language of the job ad. State your Finnish level in words plus the CEFR or YKI grade — public posts often require YKI 3 or 4 — and mention Swedish if you have it.
Honesty over self-promotion
Exaggerated skills read as dishonest in Finland. Modest, verifiable achievements build trust — and apply when you meet about half of the requirements.

CV rules for Finland
- Leave out your date of birth, age, nationality, marital or family status and full home address — Finnish career services advise omitting them, and the Non-Discrimination Act means employers may only process what the job actually requires.
- Keep it to two pages at most (one is fine early in your career) and open with a 3–5 sentence profile that states your role, strengths and what you are applying for — every Finnish source expects one.
- Write in the language of the job ad. English is enough for most IT, engineering and international roles; state your Finnish level in words plus the CEFR or YKI grade in brackets, and mention Swedish if you have it.
Recommended format
- Order: contact details → profile → work experience (newest first) → education → languages → IT skills → referees. Export as PDF named Firstname-Lastname-CV.
- A photo is optional and still common, but never required; anonymous recruitment is spreading in the public sector, so a no-photo version is the safe default.
- List 1–3 referees with their permission, or write 'available on request' — both are accepted. Do not attach work certificates (työtodistus); bring them to the interview.
ATS and recruiter fit
Finnish employers mostly screen through Teamtailor, Laura and LinkedIn, and about a quarter now use AI tools in recruiting, so mirror the exact skill and tool wording from the ad in standard section headings. Keep a plain single-column version for online portals and a designed one for direct contact.
Recruiter insight
Finnish hiring rewards honesty over self-promotion: exaggerating skills reads as dishonest, while concrete, modest achievements build trust. Apply if you meet about half of the requirements, show commitment to Finland (language courses count), and remember that most vacancies are filled through networks and open applications, not adverts.
FAQ
Common questions
Quick answers about formatting your CV for Finland employers.
Should a Finland CV include a photo?
It is optional. Photos are still common on Finnish CVs, so a CV without one is noticeable but entirely acceptable; recruiters may never require one, and anonymous recruitment is growing in the public sector. A no-photo template is the safe default for international and public-sector applications.
Should I write my CV in Finnish or English?
Use the language of the job advert. Around one in ten Finnish adverts is in English, concentrated in IT, engineering and international companies, and English also suffices in many service, construction and logistics jobs. For local-facing roles Finnish or Swedish is usually expected — state your level in words with the CEFR or YKI grade in brackets.
How long should a Finnish CV be, and is a cover letter expected?
Two pages is the ceiling; one page is fine for graduates. A tailored, one-page cover letter (työhakemus) is expected with almost every application and should explain your motivation for this role, not repeat the CV.
Will Finnish employers recognise my foreign degree?
For most jobs the employer assesses your degree directly, so explain what you studied and what the institution is. A formal decision from the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH) is needed only for regulated professions or public posts that require a specific degree level; it takes several months and carries a fee.
