What tech actually pays in Denmark

Denmark publishes detailed, register-based salary statistics and two unions survey their IT members every year — and yet most 'developer salary in Denmark' pages still mislead. Some quote an annual figure 25–30% below the official median from a thin job-board sample; others repackage a handful of big-tech packages as the national norm; almost none say whether a number includes pension, which in Denmark changes it by 12–18%. This guide keeps the three segments that actually decide your number apart — the overenskomst mainstream, the Copenhagen big-tech and product tier, and USD-paid remote work — by role and experience level, and traces every band to a named source: Statistics Denmark's LONS20 table, PROSA's and IDA's 2025–26 statistics, and levels.fyi's verified Copenhagen packages. Every DKK figure is gross and includes pension, the way Danish offers are written.

The median software developer in Denmark earns about 66,950 DKK gross per month including pension, per Statistics Denmark's 2025 earnings data covering 33,310 full-time developers (mean 69,836; lower quartile 55,028, upper quartile 81,217). The PROSA union's 2026 statistics put private-sector developers in the Copenhagen region at a median of 45,766 DKK/month with up to four years' experience, 54,080 at five to nine years, 61,905 at ten to fourteen and 69,829 at fifteen to nineteen. New graduates start around 39,000–47,000. Copenhagen's big-tech tier pays more: verified levels.fyi packages median about 59,800 DKK/month in total compensation overall and 67,200 at senior, with Microsoft's Danish development centre near 90,300.

The mainstream market is well paid and well measured. Statistics Denmark's 2025 data puts the software-developer median at 66,951 DKK/month (including pension, holiday pay and bonus), the mean at 69,836 — up 4.0% in a year — and the whole-economy median at 48,700, so a developer at the median earns about 37% more than the typical Danish employee. PROSA's 2026 statistics trace the experience curve inside that market for private-sector developers on the Copenhagen side of the country: 45,766 with up to four years' IT experience, 54,080 at five to nine, 61,905 at ten to fourteen, 69,829 at fifteen to nineteen and 75,118 beyond twenty, with West Denmark 10–20% lower at every step. IDA's new-graduate figures (software developer 41,400 in Zealand, 39,100 in Central Jutland; software engineer 44,500 and 42,000) and its 2026 indicative minimum for an MSc of 47,400 anchor the entry band.

The top segment sits above the official upper quartile. Verified Copenhagen packages on levels.fyi (119 submissions) median about 717,500 DKK a year (≈59,800/month) overall and 806,900 (≈67,200/month) at senior, with Microsoft's development centre near 1,084,000 (≈90,300/month), Maersk's senior engineering grade near 873,000 (≈72,750) and Novo Nordisk near 803,000 (≈66,900); the mainstream's own upper quartile is 81,217. The third option, USD-paid remote or contracting, pays roughly $4,000–10,000/month depending on level — at 6.6 DKK/USD competitive with the top tier at senior, and the benchmark to know before any lønforhandling.

What the 'average salary' pages get wrong about Denmark

Three distortions dominate. First, lowball job-board averages: at least one widely ranked page puts the Danish software-developer salary near 489,000 DKK a year (≈40,800/month) — below Statistics Denmark's lower quartile and barely above IDA's new-graduate figure — because it averages advertised entry-level ranges. Second, the pension blind spot: Danish salaries are quoted including pension (typically 12–18%, two-thirds paid by the employer), and pages that mix pension-inclusive union figures with pension-exclusive base figures from abroad are off by that much before they start. Third, repackaged big tech: several pages simply restate levels.fyi's Copenhagen packages as the going rate, inflating the mainstream by 30% or more.

Statistics Denmark's own concept adds a subtlety worth knowing: its 'fortjeneste' includes employer and employee pension, holiday pay and bonus, so an official figure of 66,951 corresponds to a union-style 'løn inkl. pension' a few percent lower. Every figure on this page is gross DKK per month including pension, before AM-bidrag (8%) and income tax, dated and sourced, with the concept named where it matters.

How to negotiate with these numbers

  1. Anchor on Statistics Denmark and PROSA: 'the official 2025 median for software developers is 66,951 DKK including pension, and PROSA's median for ten to fourteen years' experience is 61,905' is a factual, culturally acceptable opener in a Danish lønsamtale.

  2. Always say 'inkl. pension' and ask what the pension split is: a 55,000 offer with 17% pension beats a 57,000 offer with 10% — Danish negotiation runs on the total, not the base.

  3. Price the East/West gap explicitly: PROSA shows the Copenhagen side 10–20% above West Denmark at every experience level, so an Aarhus or Odense offer should be compared with the regional figure, not the national one.

  4. Negotiate the starting salary hardest: Danish overenskomst rounds and the annual lønsamtale deliver 3–5% in a good year (Statistics Denmark: developers +4.0% in 2025), so your entry point compounds for years.

  5. At senior level, name real alternatives: Copenhagen big tech at 72,000–95,000 DKK/month and USD remote at $6,000–10,000 both clear the mainstream band, and Danish employers respond to concrete alternatives more than to percentage asks.

Where these numbers come from

Primary source: Statistics Denmark, StatBank table LONS20 (earnings by occupation DISCO-08), 2025, released September 2026 — standardised hourly earnings for employees excluding young people and apprentices, all sectors, converted to monthly at 160.33 hours (the factor Statistics Denmark uses for its own monthly mean). Supporting sources: PROSA Lønstatistik 2026 (January-2026 payslips, n 2,642 — Build-track medians by IT experience 45,766 / 54,080 / 61,905 / 69,829 / 75,118, East private sector; West 10–20% lower; Build average 63,812); IDA 2025 new-graduate statistics (software developer 41,400 / 39,100, software engineer 44,500 / 42,000, 2026 indicative MSc minimum 47,400; private members' mean 70,059 men / 63,619 women, n 24,500); levels.fyi verified Copenhagen packages (119 submissions, queried October 2026).

All DKK figures are gross monthly pay including pension unless labelled total compensation (the levels.fyi anchors, which include bonus and equity). Statistics Denmark's earnings concept also includes holiday pay and bonus, and the office publishes quartiles rather than a 90th percentile and no occupation-by-region split, so the Copenhagen premium comes from PROSA (East vs West) and DST's all-occupation regional table (+9.3%). No Danish source splits frontend, backend, full-stack or mobile pay with a stated sample, so those role pages are derived from the official 2512/2513/2514/2511/2519 distributions and marked indicative. USD-remote bands are indicative international contracting rates. Where sources disagree, bands were widened conservatively.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average software developer salary in Denmark in 2026?
Statistics Denmark's 2025 earnings data puts the median software developer at 66,951 DKK gross per month including pension, holiday pay and bonus, and the mean at 69,836, across 33,310 full-time developers; the lower and upper quartiles are 55,028 and 81,217. PROSA's 2026 union statistics give private-sector medians of 54,080 at five to nine years' experience and 61,905 at ten to fourteen on the Copenhagen side. Copenhagen big tech sits above: verified senior packages median about 67,200 DKK/month in total compensation, with Microsoft's development centre near 90,300.
How much do Microsoft, Maersk, Novo Nordisk and other top Copenhagen employers pay developers?
Verified packages on levels.fyi (October 2026) show Microsoft Development Center Copenhagen at a median near 1,084,000 DKK a year (≈90,300/month), Maersk's senior engineering grade near 873,000 (≈72,750), Novo Nordisk near 803,000 (≈66,900) and Netcompany near 640,000 (≈53,400) in total compensation, against a city-wide senior median of about 806,900 (≈67,200). Those totals include bonus and equity — the top end runs 30–50% above the overenskomst mainstream's senior band.
Are Danish salaries quoted with or without pension, and before or after tax?
With pension and before tax — including every figure on this page. Danish offers state a monthly gross salary 'inkl. pension', where the pension (typically 12–18% of pay, about two-thirds paid by the employer) is part of the number. From that, AM-bidrag takes 8% and income tax applies on the rest, with marginal rates of roughly 42% at the median developer's pay, 49% above the mellemskat threshold and 56% above the topskat threshold. Statistics Denmark's figures additionally include holiday pay and bonus.
Is USD remote work worth it for Denmark-based developers?
At senior level it competes directly with Copenhagen big tech: $6,000–10,000/month (≈39,700–66,200 DKK at 6.6 DKK/USD) against verified senior packages of 72,000–95,000 DKK/month — so only the top of the USD range clears the Danish top tier. At mid level ($4,000–6,500) it is roughly level with the typical-employer band of 48,000–60,000, and you give up overenskomst protections, employer pension, feriepenge and Danish employment security, which transfer poorly to foreign contracting.
