Local expertise

What Danish employers expect

Practical guidance based on how Danish employers actually screen CVs.

01

Photo customary, never required

Most Danish employers prefer a photo — around nine in ten recruiters — but none may demand one. Age, marital status and children are optional today, and employers may not ask your age.

02

Profile text first, results throughout

Open with a 4–8 line profile rewritten for each job: top competences, degree, why Denmark. No aspirations or ‘willing to learn’ — Danish recruiters read that as missing skills. Give every role tasks and numbered results.

03

English is fine, Danish is noticed

Match the advert’s language. Thousands of vacancies need no Danish, yet most recruiters sort on it — state your level (Prøve i Dansk 3 = B2, Studieprøven = C1) and show you are learning.

04

Flat, informal, humble

First names for everyone, humility about status, no salary talk until they raise it. Pair the CV with a one-page, forward-looking ansøgning — two-thirds of employers want both.

CV guidance

Get the details right

1

CV rules for Denmark

  • Open with a profile text (profiltekst) of four to eight lines, rewritten for each job: your top three competences, your degree, and why Denmark. Leave out career aspirations and 'willingness to learn' — Danish recruiters read them as a lack of skills.
  • Make it competence-based: a key-competence block near the top, then for each role the tasks you owned and the results you delivered, with numbers. Explain foreign employers (size, product, country) and foreign titles — Danish recruiters will not guess.
  • Write in the language of the advert: an English ad gets an English CV. Most Workindenmark vacancies do not require Danish, but most recruiters sort on language, so state your level (Prøve i Dansk 3 = B2, Studieprøven = C1) and show you have started learning.
2

Recommended format

  • Two pages is the target: recruiters prefer two or fewer and unions allow up to three. Reverse-chronological, skimmable in about a minute.
  • A photo is customary and most employers prefer one, but it is never mandatory. Age, marital status and children were traditionally listed; they are optional today, and employers may not ask your age.
  • Write 'Referencer efter aftale' (references on request) — Danish employers check references after the final interview. Recommendation letters are not a standard attachment; a free degree assessment from the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science is worth attaching.
3

ATS and recruiter fit

Danish companies hire through portals such as Emply, HR-ON and Teamtailor, but AI screening is still rare — people read your CV. Mirror the advert's exact keywords and their synonyms in standard headings so the portal's search and the recruiter's one-minute skim both find them.

Recruiter insight

Two-thirds of Danish employers want a CV plus a one-page ansøgning — forward-looking, present tense, why this company and why you, never a repeat of the CV. The culture is flat and informal: first names for everyone, humility about status, and no salary talk until they raise it. Unsolicited applications and calling before you apply are normal. Recruiters' biggest turn-offs are many short jobs and a commute over an hour.

FAQ

Common questions

Quick answers about formatting your CV for Denmark employers.

01

Should a Denmark CV include a photo?

It is customary and most employers prefer one — around nine in ten recruiters in Danish surveys — but it is never mandatory. A professional head-and-shoulders photo in the top corner is the norm; leave it off if you prefer, especially for public-sector roles.

02

Should I write my CV in Danish or English?

Follow the advert: an English advert gets an English CV and application, a Danish one a Danish CV. Workindenmark lists thousands of English-language vacancies that do not require Danish, but most recruiters still sort on language, so state your Danish level and that you are learning.

03

What is an 'ansøgning' and how is it different from a cover letter?

The motivated application is a one-page letter Danish employers weigh almost as heavily as the CV. It is forward-looking and written in the present tense: why this company, why this role, and what you will contribute, with concrete examples — not a summary of your CV. About a third of private companies also accept a 'motivated CV' instead.

04

Do I need a work permit to work in Denmark?

EU and EEA citizens need no permit, only an EU residence document after three months. Others usually use the Pay Limit Scheme (a salary threshold that SIRI, the immigration agency, revises every January and lowers for certified employers), the Positive Lists for shortage occupations, or the Fast-track scheme. Permits are employer-sponsored, so secure the job offer first — your CV and ansøgning do that work.

05

Will Danish employers recognise my foreign degree?

For most jobs the employer decides, so explain the degree and institution. The Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science offers a free assessment within about two months that you can attach to applications; regulated professions additionally require authorisation.
