Create your CVWhy ATS matters in Denmark
Large Danish employers – from multinational pharma houses to Copenhagen-based tech firms – rely on applicant tracking systems (ATS) such as Jobindex Recruit, Workday, or Taleo. The ATS is the first gatekeeper; if your file cannot be parsed, it never reaches a human recruiter, no matter how strong your experience is.
In Denmark the motiveret ansøgning (motivated application letter) is read side-by-side with the CV, so a rejected CV means the whole application is discarded. Knowing which platforms dominate helps you tailor the file format, naming convention, and keyword strategy to the exact parser each system uses.
Do this: identify the ATS mentioned in the job posting (often listed under “Ansøgningssystem”). Then download a sample job description from that portal and run a quick test upload to see whether the system accepts PDFs, Word .docx, or both.
Avoid this: sending a stylised PDF with embedded graphics to a system that only reads plain text – the parser will see a wall of unreadable characters and flag your application as corrupted.
Understanding the Danish ATS landscape also protects you from the common “high-volume role” trap, where dozens of candidates are screened automatically before a recruiter even opens the first file. Your ats venligt cv must therefore survive the technical filter and speak the language of the posting, whether that language is Danish or English.
Formatting that survives Danish ATS parsing
Danish recruiters expect a clean, two-page layout. The sections should follow the standard Danish headings: Uddannelse, Erfaring, Kompetencer, and optionally Certificeringer. Keep the structure flat – no nested tables or multi-column designs – because most ATS flatten the document before searching for keywords.
Do-and-don’t checklist
-
Do use a standard font such as Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica, size 11–12 for body text.
-
Do employ simple bullet points (• or –) and avoid special characters like em-dashes or decorative icons.
-
Do save the file as PDF/A (the archival version that preserves text) or as a Word .docx; both are reliably parsed by Danish systems.
-
Do keep the file size under 2 MB – large images or embedded logos quickly push you over the limit.
-
Don’t insert tables for education dates or skill matrices; ATS reads them as a single block of text and loses the date information.
-
Don’t use background colors, text boxes, or header/footer graphics; these are stripped out and can cause the parser to mis-read the order of sections.
-
Don’t exceed two pages; Danish recruiters expect concise, results-focused content.
A practical example:
| Section | Bad Example | ATS-Friendly Example |
|---|---|---|
| Education | <table><tr><td>2018-2022</td><td>University of Copenhagen</td></tr></table> | Uddannelse 2018-2022 – University of Copenhagen, BSc Computer Science |
| Skills | • Java • Python • SQL (inside a colored box) | Kompetencer • Java • Python • SQL |
When you need a photo – common but optional in Denmark – place it at the top-right corner of the first page, sized no larger than 3 cm × 4 cm, and ensure it is embedded as a simple image, not a background layer.
For further guidance on choosing the right language for your CV, see our guide on Choosing CV Language in Denmark: When to Use English or Danish.
Mirroring the job posting wording
Danish ATS look for exact noun phrases and tool names. If a posting mentions “SAP ERP”, “Agile Scrum” or “Python 3.9”, the parser will only match those exact strings. Paraphrasing – e.g., “experience with enterprise resource planning” – will not trigger the keyword filter.
Step-by-step mirroring
- Copy the headline – If the ad is titled “Senior Data Engineer – Azure & Databricks”, include that exact title in the first line of your Erfaring entry.
- Extract tool names – List each technology under Kompetencer exactly as written. Use the same capitalization and spacing.
- Match language – For Danish ads, translate your skill descriptions into Danish (e.g., “Dataanalyse med Python”); for English-only postings, keep the terms in English.
- Place keywords where the ATS expects them – Most Danish systems prioritize the Kompetencer section for technical terms, while soft-skill keywords (e.g., “teamwork”, “projektledelse”) are often scanned in the Erfaring bullet points.
Do-this / Avoid-that list
-
Do repeat each key phrase at least once in the appropriate section.
-
Do keep the phrasing identical – no added punctuation or synonyms.
-
Do use the Danish term “motiveret ansøgning” when referencing the cover letter in your CV.
-
Avoid over-stuffing – more than three repetitions of the same phrase can look spammy and may be penalised by newer ATS that detect keyword stuffing.
-
Avoid mixing languages within a single bullet point; keep each bullet either fully Danish or fully English.
A concrete illustration: a job ad for a “Logistics Coordinator – Vestas Wind Systems” lists the keywords “WMS”, “Lean”, and “Excel VBA”. In your CV you would write:
Kompetencer
• WMS (Warehouse Management System) implementation
• Lean-process optimisation
• Excel VBA macro development
Notice the exact wording and the placement under Kompetencer. For a deeper dive into building a skills section that beats ATS in the tech sector, read our post on IT CV for Copenhagen & Aarhus: Build a Skills Section that Beats ATS.
Quick pre-send ATS check
Before you hit “send”, run a final sanity test to ensure the ats venligt cv will be read correctly by any Danish parser.
- Plain-text test – Open the saved PDF in a plain-text editor (or copy-paste into Notepad). Scan for hidden characters, broken bullet points, or missing line breaks. Anything that appears as a garbled string will likely break the ATS.
- Keyword verification – Keep the original job posting open side-by-side. Use the find function (Ctrl + F) to confirm each required term appears at least once in the same wording on your CV.
- File size and naming – Ensure the file is under 2 MB. Name it with only alphanumeric characters and underscores, for example:
Anna_Smith_CV.pdf. Avoid spaces, special symbols, or long strings that could be truncated by the upload system.
Final checklist
- ☐ Two-page limit respected
- ☐ Standard headings used (Uddannelse, Erfaring, Kompetencer)
- ☐ No tables, graphics, or unusual fonts
- ☐ Saved as PDF/A or .docx, under 2 MB
- ☐ All key phrases from the posting appear verbatim
- ☐ File name follows
FirstName_LastName_CV.pdfpattern
If any item is unchecked, revise the document before submission.
