CV Personal Statement Examples for Every Career Stage (2026)
20+ CV personal statement examples for graduates, career changers, and experienced professionals. Learn the formula, avoid common mistakes, and write a profile that gets interviews.

What Is a CV Personal Statement?
A CV personal statement — also called a professional summary, profile, or career objective — is a short paragraph at the top of your CV that introduces you to the reader. It sits directly below your contact information and is the first thing a hiring manager reads.
Its job is simple: convince the reader to keep going.
Done well, a personal statement summarises who you are professionally, what you bring to the table, and what kind of role you are looking for — all in three to five sentences. Done poorly, it is a collection of generic phrases that add no value and waste the reader's time.
This guide gives you the formula, the mistakes to avoid, and over 20 real examples across different career stages and industries.
The Formula for a Strong Personal Statement
Every effective CV personal statement follows the same basic structure:
[Who you are] + [What you bring] + [What you are looking for]
- Who you are: Your professional identity — job title, years of experience, field
- What you bring: Your strongest two or three skills, achievements, or areas of expertise
- What you are looking for: The type of role or company you are targeting
Length: three to five sentences. No more. Hiring managers spend seconds on this — not minutes.

What to Avoid
Generic phrases that say nothing:
- "Hard-working team player"
- "Results-oriented professional"
- "Passionate about making a difference"
- "Excellent communication skills"
Every candidate uses these. They add no information and signal a lack of effort.
Writing in third person. "John is an experienced developer..." reads as odd and impersonal. Write in first person (without actually using "I" — simply omit it: "Experienced developer with...").
Being too long. More than five sentences and hiring managers will not read it. Aim for three to four well-crafted sentences rather than a paragraph that rambles.
Repeating your job title without context. "Marketing manager with experience in marketing" tells the reader nothing. Every sentence should add new information.
Forgetting to tailor it. A personal statement that does not reference the specific type of role or industry you are targeting looks like a copy-paste job. Even small adjustments — changing a job title, referencing their industry — make a significant difference.
Writing Your Own: A Step-by-Step Process
- Write your professional identity: What is your job title, how many years of experience do you have, and in what field?
- List your top three achievements or skills: What have you done that is genuinely impressive or relevant to the role?
- Define what you want: What kind of role, company, or opportunity are you looking for?
- Draft three to five sentences combining the above
- Cut anything generic: If it could apply to any candidate in any industry, remove it
- Tailor for the specific role: Adjust the job title you use and the skills you emphasise to match the job posting
